District Football: Tigers Roll Past Parkview For 5th Straight District Title

CARTHAGE — Colton Winder was in the eighth grade when the streak began.
On Friday, the senior linebacker was anchoring a stifling defensive unit for Carthage as it earned its fifth consecutive district title in a 65-16 shellacking of Parkview at David Haffner Stadium.
The win advanced the Tigers to the Class 5 quarterfinals to take on Lebanon, a 32-19 winner over Willard, on Nov. 17 in Carthage.
"Just being a part of a streak like this, it's an honor," Winder said. "Carthage wasn't always the program that it is now, but Coach (Jon) Guidie built it up and gave us all a chance to make some football memories that you don't ever forget."
The appreciation was reciprocated by Guidie, who labeled Winder as a standout performer for a defense that managed to shut out a potent Vikings offense completely in the first half.
Parkview was averaging 51 points in the four games leading up to the District 6 title game but finished the night with just two second-half scores — both against Carthage reserves.
Senior running back Blake Delacruz, Parkview's all-time leading rusher, was denied a 100-yard rushing game for just the second time of the season. He finished with 80 yards on 16 carries, with 53 yards coming after halftime.
"One thing about this group is if you give them a challenge, they seem to respond to that," Guidie said. "All week long, the focus was to make sure (Delacruz) wasn't the guy who would hurt us. So I'm very proud of those guys on defense."
Meanwhile, the Carthage offense put together its highest scoring total of the season. A frigid night with moderate wind didn't phase the Tigers as they racked up 412 rush yards and scored in each quarter.
Four different Carthage players managed to log at least 60 yards on the ground.
Running back Tyler Mueller, who played less than three quarters, led all rushers with 131 yards and five touchdowns on 13 carries. His longest score came on a 22-yard scamper that gave the Tigers a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter. His final end zone appearance of the opening half, a 2-yard rush later in the quarter, widened the advantage to 35-0 by halftime.
Quarterback Patrick Carlton scored the first points of the night on a 1-yard run in the early stages of the first quarter. He finished with 90 yards on 11 carries while wide receiver Tucker Downing added 60 yards on the ground.
"With our (starters), I'm not sure we ever had a third down in the first half," Guidie said. "That tells me that our first-down efficiency was pretty good. We didn't throw the ball very much, but on a night like this, that ball is hard and slick. But our kids did a great job up front in controlling the line of scrimmage and our backs were running hard."
Quarterback Zeke Sappington, competing in his second game since returning from a hand injury, played the first two drives of the second half and racked up 74 yards on just four carries. He had a touchdown run of 20 yards to extend the Carthage lead to 42-0.
Carthage's Ashton Lancaster capped the scoring for the night with a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
