SPRINGFIELD - The district opening match for #Carthage vs. #5 Republic saw a closely contested game. Carthage earned the district nod one spot ahead of Republic due to head to head play in the COC season. Republic kept constant pressure in the first half, eventually taking a 1-0 halftime lead.
As the second half opened, Republic kept up the pressure on Carthage resulting in their 2nd goal of the day at five minutes into play.
But Carthage would not go away easily. The Carthage offense found its footing and pressed the Republic defense most of the rest of the second half. The work paid off with three minutes remaining in the game as
Kianna Yates headed a crossing pass from
Daniela Marquez into the back of the net, cutting the Republic lead to 2-1. Carthage continued to pressure the RHS keeper in the final minutes but couldn't find the back of the net again. The Lady Tigers ended their season with a 10-9 overall record.
